It has also had some degree of mystery. There is some mystery over the details and history. Louis X or it might have been Louis XI, was about to lose France in a battle. The other army had more weapons and more soldiers who were better fed that the starving French army. Despairing, Louis put the already ancient symbol on his shield for power and luck. Against all predictions and expectations, Louis won the battle and saved France. He declared the Fleur de Lis to be the symbol of France. There were times when it was forbidden for any but French nobility to wear or display the fleur de lis. Personally I think that is a bit rude, but it also might explain why the symbol is associated with class and elegance. Fleur de Lis meaning Flower of Louis- at least in one translation. Some say it only means lili flower. Like everything else about the Fleur de Lis, it is mysterious.
